TyE-Boston Mission:

Offer a business plan competition geared to educate and inspire high school students to be entrepreneurs through mentor based programs, taught by established industry leaders that foster innovation, leadership skills, creativity and self-confidence.

Vision:

Empower our youth to become entrepreneurs by engaging them through quality educational programs that include instruction and mentoring designed to
Develop business acumen, communication skills

• Nurture to be a well rounded personality
• Instill confidence to lead in a global environment

About TyE:

TiE Boston a not-for-profit organization with a mission to support entrepreneurship established TyE in 2005 to foster an educational program to excite young people to discover the rewards and challenges of becoming an entrepreneur. Currently TyE is in its fourth successful year of operation. Over 100 students have participated in the program from over 25 local schools. As part of the TyE educational program, students participate in a $10,000 Business Plan Competition. There have been three winning teams to date. The Competition sponsors were Microsoft in 2006 and 2008, McDermott, Will & Emery in 2007.

Accomplishments:

Background
• TyE established in 2005 to help young people discover the rewards and challenges of becoming an entrepreneur
• Over 100 student participants from over 25 local schools in the past four years
• Teams compete in the Business Plan Competition for a $10K prize
• TyE Boston won the TiE Global Award for excellent, innovative approach for "The Most Successful involvement of young entrepreneurs" in 2007 and 2008
• TyE website and blog launched in 2008

The Program:

• A six month curriculum which consists of three months of class room instruction and three months of workshops. Program starts in October and ends in March
• Open to High School Students
• Approximately 35 students are selected and work in teams
• All class room training and workshops conducted on Saturday from 9:00AM to 1:00PM
• Classroom Instruction and Workshops
o Class room instruction includes inspirational speeches by successful entrepreneurs, followed by lectures and interactive discussion on business related topics
o Workshops are designed to teach soft skills and to help students become aware and knowledgeable on all pertinent aspects of operating a business
• Business Plan Competition
o After completing class room instruction and workshops, students form teams and come up with a business idea, and develop it in to a business plan
o Each team is assigned a mentor who guides the team to develop its idea into a viable business plan
o Teams present their business plan to a panel of judges consisting of Venture Capitalists and Entrepreneurs
o 3 teams will share the $10K cash prize
• Each individual student, who completes the entire Program including the business plan competition, receives a certificate of recognition from the local TiE-Chapter they represent

The Competition:

Students form teams comprised of minimum of 3 and maximum of 6 students per team. Each team comes up with an idea and develops the idea into a viable business plan with the guidance of the mentor. All teams present their business plan to a panel of Judges, who represent VCs, Angels and Entrepreneurs.

10k Prize – 3 top teams will share the $10k cash prize 5k 3k and 2k respectively. TyE-Boston Gala after the final competition will celebrate all the participating teams.

Since its inception, over 60 students participated in the program and several students repeated the program. 9 teams competed for the cash prize. In 2007, the winning team was featured in CNBC national broadcast.

TiE Global Award:

In recognition of its excellent innovative approach, TYE received TiE Global award in 2007 for the most unique program implemented by a TiE chapter.

On Saturday, April 17, 2010 the first 2009-2010 TyE Global competition was held at MIT (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Cambridge, Masachusetts (US) hosted by TiE-Boston

The second TyE Global was held on April 30th 2011 in Raleigh North Carolina hosted by TiE-Carolinas

The 6th Annual TyE 10K Business Plan Competition & Award ceremonies was held on Saturday, April 9, 2011
 at Holiday Inn Select, 15 Middlesex Canal Park, Woburn MA
